Healthy Kids Have
Healthier Futures
During the month of September, the Pike County Health Department’s Healthy
Lifestyles Program introduced “Mission: X Club” to 3rd, 4th,
and 5th grades students at Robinson Creek Elementary and Christ
Central, and 3rd grade students at Pikeville Elementary. The
Mission: X Club is a nutrition and physical activity after-school program
with a simple yet important goal: to help young children develop life
skills for making healthful eating and active living choices. The
approach is fun- “learning by doing!” And its teaching design offers a
successful blend of physical education and nutrition awareness that is
action packed and relevant to their everyday lives. Instructors Danita
Bartley MS, RD and Belinda Bentley RN, IBCLC state that the activities are
intended to motivate children to make smart decisions for health, now and
as they grow up.
The program was delivered over a span of 4 weeks, one class per week, with
over 100 children participating. Each child received weekly prizes for
attendance and at the end of the program, the participants were awarded a
certificate of completion and a t-shirt. Students who attended every
session were eligible for a bike give-away (1 boy and 1 girl bike per
school). A big thank you to the Pike County Diabetes Partnership and
Wal-Mart for donating the bicycles.
