Founded
in 1926 , by Dr. J.W. Vicars an appropriation of $4000 was allotted for
the establishment of a Department of Health in Pike County, Kentucky
In order that the Health Department might have rooms to use the
Pikeville Woman's Club gave up their club room for clinical use . Dr. N.J.
Keith was elected as the first health officer. To say that the
immunization journey was stormy is an understatement . With typhoid and
small pox running rapid still people feared vaccinations from health
officers and nurses Gradually through education and observation , the
resistance to inoculations and vaccinations lessened . As the public
accepted protection from disease and illness brought to them by the Pike
County Health Department.
Today this organization is
housed in an ultra modern facility of it's own, in the heart of the
lush green valleys of the Appalachian Mountains . Located in the City
of Pikeville , under the direction of Mr. Paul Hopkins,
the P.C.H.D. is as much a part of the community as is the wonderful caring
folks that make it up . So drop in , write , e-mail or call for an
appointment today . Our friendly experienced health officials will
assist you with any of your health concerns.
