History

The Pike County Health Department is seeking old photos, personal account, newpaper articles and health department staff information for an archive of the history of public health in Pike County.

Public health in Pike County was first recorded at the state in 1896. We have very little information and would appreciate anything. This year marks 112 years of public health in Pike County.

Below is a list of individuals and the time frames in which they served:

The state board of health designated three Pike County physicians to work in public health in 1896 and 1897.

Dr. J.W. Wrightsman

In 1898-1899

Dr. D.M. Adkins

In 1900-1903

Dr. W.A. Campbell
Dr. M. Pinson
Dr H.H. Stallard

The first public health office was Dr. W.J. Walter appointed in 1904. Dr. Walters also served in 1904-1906, 1916-1920, 1944, 1947, 1952-1955.

Dr. J.W. Vicars was appointed health officer in 1926.

Dr. N.J. Keith and Dr. F.W. Forge served as health officers, but we do not have the years served.

Dr. H.K. Bailey was health officer from 1938-1942.

Dr M.D. Flanary was a board of health chairman and health officer.

Mr. Charlie Wright was adirector from September 2, 1945 thru April 27, 1952.

Dr. Edward I. Rustin 1952 thru 1970.

Dr. M.P. Fox 1970 thru 1993.

Mr. Paul Hopkins 1993 to present.
